Smoke Control Design & Assessment

CFD-based smoke control design and assessment for a student residential apartment building, supporting system performance validation and compliance with UK fire safety guidance.

Smoke Control Design & Assessment – Marketgait Apartments, Dundee

Thermal-Flow Consultants carried out CFD modelling to assess the mechanical ventilation system and support the design and validation of the smoke control strategy for a multi-storey residential building.

The project required verification of smoke control performance within a complex residential layout, ensuring tenable conditions were maintained within escape routes and that the system operated effectively under fire conditions.

Performance based fire engineering CFD simulations were undertaken to model smoke spread and assess conditions during typical fire scenarios. The analysis focused on:

  • Smoke movement within corridors and common areas

  • Performance of the smoke control system

  • Tenability conditions along escape routes (Requirement B1)

  • Conditions for fire fighting intervention (Requirement B5)

Outcome

  • Demonstrated performance of the smoke control system under design fire scenarios

  • Verified tenable conditions within escape routes

  • Provided technical evidence to support design decisions and regulatory compliance
