Mechanical Smoke Ventilation System Assessment

Performance based engineering smoke control design and assessment for a multi-storey residential building, supporting performance validation and compliance with UK fire safety guidance.

Smoke Control Design & Assessment – Leinster House, London

Thermal-Flow Consultants carried out CFD modelling to assess smoke movement and support the design and validation of the smoke control strategy for a multi-storey residential building.

The project involved a complex building layout with constraints typical of existing or architecturally sensitive developments, requiring careful design & assessment of the mechanical smoke ventilation system.

Ensuring effective smoke control performance and maintaining tenable conditions within escape routes required detailed analysis.

Our Approach

CFD simulations were undertaken to model worst case fire scenarios conditions within the building. The analysis focused on:

  • Smoke movement within corridors and common areas

  • Performance of the smoke control strategy

  • Tenability conditions along escape routes

  • Interaction between building geometry and ventilation

Outcome

  • Demonstrated effectiveness of the smoke control approach under fire conditions

  • Verified tenable conditions within escape routes

  • Provided technical justification to support design and regulatory compliance
